Return To Abrams Falls

I recently had the opportunity to hike a moderately difficult trail of 5.5 miles out and back, to the picturesque Abrams Falls, a 20-foot tall and voluminous waterfall located in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, at Cades Cove, Tennessee.

See map location here.

Cades Cove is a broad, verdant valley surrounded by mountains and is one of the most popular destinations in the Great Smokies.

An 11-mile drive through Cades Cove is filled with historic sites from pioneers who settled the area, as well as stunning panoramic landscape views. Hikers should turn right at the #10 marker, following a gravel road to the trailhead for Abrams Falls. Despite the sign posted (above), there are restrooms in the parking area.

For the most part, the trail follows Abrams Creek, providing a soothing sound of running water to enjoy during ones hike. There are several changes in elevation along the way, and the trail can be quite rocky in areas – and, sometimes muddy. This is a popular trail which can become crowded, so it’s best to arrive early. And, don’t forget to bring water!

Wonderful series of photos Phil, I love them all, it was nice seeing the video of the water fall. I haven’t been hiking at a place like that in a couple months now. Can’t wait to get out there again after seeing these photos. It is back to cold and rainy here.

Abrams Falls looks absolutely stunning! Reading about your hike, I could almost hear the rushing water and feel the uneven trail underfoot. It instantly reminded me of Devi’s Fall in Pokhara, Nepal — a place where the power of nature takes your breath away. Trekking there, you follow winding trails surrounded by lush greenery, and each step brings new sights, sounds, and little surprises.

Pokhara itself is magical: serene lakes reflecting the towering Annapurna and Himalayan peaks, local paths leading to hidden viewpoints, and the scent of fresh mountain air mixing with the aroma of street-side momos. Every waterfall, every trail, every glimpse of the mountains tells a story you carry with you long after the hike is over. Truly, places like this make you feel alive, connected, and eager for the next adventure.

I’ve driven the Cades Cove loop three times; the traffic was bumper to bumper each time. We stopped for bear crossings and never parked to hike the trails for the waterfall. Next time we go I’ll pack a picnic lunch for one of their many shaded picnic tables and plan to hike towards the waterfall. Beautiful photo, thanks for sharing!

Thanks for the comment, Melanie. Indeed, Cades Cove is both beautiful and, often, can be overcrowded and slow-going. But, as you note, Abrams Falls is an option you’re sure to enjoy. It’s usually not too busy, a good hike and the falls are beautiful. And, the area has several other wonderful points of interest, such as Spruce Flats Falls and Lynn Camp Falls – both in the Tremont section of the Smokies, before Cades Cove. Have a great week ahead! 🙂
