It’s morning in the foothills of the Smoky Mountains. For this small black bear cub, that means it’s time to climb a tall pine tree! Gotta practice, right? This was one of three cubs sharing this tree and having fun, as mother bear guards the area below. Photographed along the Foothills Parkway near Wears Valley. Prints available.

My pleasure, Holly ~ glad you like it 🤗🌹 I was at this spot only a few minutes when I heard the bear cubs starting to climb…lucky timing 📸🍀

They are adorable (I’m actually terrified of bears) but love them from a distance. This is a stunning shot! Lucky indeed!

Most of my experience with bears has been from a safe distance…except for one close encounter with a bear. That was an eye opener, to have such a large wild animal approach so quietly, within 30-feet.

That would be a terrifying experience! Once while hiking in the Blue Ridge Mountains we saw a good sized Brown Bear from a distance. I’ve been rather obsessed with coming face to face with one since then.

Hi Cindy ~ glad you like my picture, thanks 🤗🌹 There’s really a lot to see a short distance in any direction from where I live, so that really helps.
