Michigan Beach

Prints available. This grunge style vintage photograph was taken in the summer on Lake Superior in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, in the city of Marquette. This was the beach of my childhood, a wonderful place to enjoy the sand – yet, notice how few people are actually in the water? Brrr…

  1. What a beautiful throwback memory Phil! The water is that cold huh??? ๐Ÿฅถ๐Ÿฅถ๐Ÿฅถ

    1. Hi Kym. In this case, a powerful overnight rainstorm carried with it all the warmer surface water offshore, further out into the lake. I can’t say exactly, but would guess that as a result the water was 15 degrees colder (and, its never very warm to begin), with several dozen people (including me) swimming the day before. It was a shocking experience…pun intended. ๐Ÿ˜†

      1. Love your pun Phil!!! ๐Ÿ˜ ๐Ÿ˜œ ๐Ÿคช My goodness, it’s interesting how Mother Nature can change things in a heartbeat huh? I know you have some beautiful and fun memories from such childhood adventures! Love it!!! ๐Ÿ’–

    1. Thanks ๐Ÿ‘

  3. Love the vintage vibe. Beautiful photo. Sure looks like a wonderful place to be a kid enjoying life. I am sure you have great memories.

    1. Same here, glad you like it Michele. Yes, many fond memories, indeed, and a respect for the power of nature – Lake Superior storms were an impressive sight. I appreciate your thoughtful comments, and its always nice to see your lovely smile to start the day. ๐Ÿ˜˜๐Ÿ€

      1. Thank you Phil. I am sure you saw some incredible storms there. I have seen my share of monsoons and a few tornadoes in Denver, but the wildest storm ride I experienced was a fierce tropical storm in Rocky Point when I was a teen. ๐ŸŒช Happy Friday eve to you!

        1. Just as your smile brightened the start of my day, your presence this evening is most welcome, as well. How nice of you to stop by, my lovely friend – I was actually reading one of your posts just now. I do enjoy certain weather events and bet that the tropical storm at Rocky Point ๐ŸŒช left quite as impression. You’re referring to Mexico, yes? Thank you, Michele ~ Happy Friday eve to you ๐Ÿค—

  4. I remember how cold that Lake Michigan 64F water was even in August and September in 1998. I canโ€™t remember the town on the lake but it was about an hour from Grand Rapids where we were staying. However, Lake Superior is even colder as far as I remember it. And that is even further in time, back to the 70s when mom and dad brought us on a cross Canada camping trip. See all the memories one blog post can uncover? Thanks Phil!

    1. Right on, dear Louise ~ I’m happy to share in such fond recollections ๐Ÿ™‚ Perhaps the town you visited may have been Holland, Grand Haven or Saugatuck? There are several others, of course. What I remember about temperatures in Lake Superior was that, no matter how warm the top few feet of surface water was, diving below the surface became colder quickly!

      1. It was Muskegon. It bothered me to the point that I had to verify it on a map. ๐Ÿ˜

        1. Ah, yes…Muskegon ๐Ÿ˜ Very nice ๐ŸŒŠ

  5. Cold lake water – the best!!! Memorable image!!
