Michigan Beach

Prints available. This grunge style vintage photograph was taken in the summer on Lake Superior in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, in the city of Marquette. This was the beach of my childhood, a wonderful place to enjoy the sand – yet, notice how few people are actually in the water? Brrr…

      Hi Kym. In this case, a powerful overnight rainstorm carried with it all the warmer surface water offshore, further out into the lake. I can’t say exactly, but would guess that as a result the water was 15 degrees colder (and, its never very warm to begin), with several dozen people (including me) swimming the day before. It was a shocking experience…pun intended. 😆

        Thank you Phil. I am sure you saw some incredible storms there. I have seen my share of monsoons and a few tornadoes in Denver, but the wildest storm ride I experienced was a fierce tropical storm in Rocky Point when I was a teen. 🌪 Happy Friday eve to you!

    I remember how cold that Lake Michigan 64F water was even in August and September in 1998. I can’t remember the town on the lake but it was about an hour from Grand Rapids where we were staying. However, Lake Superior is even colder as far as I remember it. And that is even further in time, back to the 70s when mom and dad brought us on a cross Canada camping trip.       Right on, dear Louise ~ I’m happy to share in such fond recollections 🙂 Perhaps the town you visited may have been Holland, Grand Haven or Saugatuck? There are several others, of course. What I remember about temperatures in Lake Superior was that, no matter how warm the top few feet of surface water was, diving below the surface became colder quickly!
