Upper Catawba Falls

Beyond a warning sign and detached yellow ‘caution’ ribbons, up a mountain of staggered rock faces and slick, damp soil, blanketed with decaying leaves from last autumn, a less traveled path through mature rhododendron trees led me to the 50-foot tall Upper Catawba Falls.

See map location here.

I’d hiked here once before, at a time when conditions were dry and a convenient climbing rope was intact, but this visit was more of a challenge. As such, all the grander my reward when finally I reached the falls.

This photograph was taken while standing in freezing cold mountain water, on and off for approximately 20 minutes. Later, upon departure, I found a sunny spot along the trail to sit, removing my shoes and wet socks to ring out the water and warm my feet!
