Short Rock

This vintage photograph was taken on Lake Superior in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, in the city of Marquette. Referred to as Short Rock, it’s one of several islands easily accessible from the shoreline.

  6. Beautiful! I planned my trip with your help. I’ll spend 3 nights in Traverse City (Sleeping Bear Dunes/Torch Lake/possible bike ride on Leelanau Trail…then 3 nights in Marquette Presque Isle, Sugarloaf Mountain, Dead River Falls (1 ½ mile total r/t trail), Mt. Marquette Lookout)…then 3 nights near Munising (Pictured Rocks). Plus I’ll stop at Tahquamenon Falls State Park on my way to Marquette. Thanks for your help!

    1. You rock, Sherry! Michigan summers are beautiful, and, with good weather, I think you’ll fall in love with the places you’ve outlined! Good call, too, regarding Tahquamenon Falls. From Sugarloaf Mountain, you can see another mountain (Hogsback Mountain), and Little Presque Isle (which can be reached by wading in waist deep water). Marquette has two piers to enjoy, and Presque Isle has (still?) an old elevated lookout (watch closely) with a great view – a short way beyond Chief Kawbawgam’s grave. After that, there is Black Rock Cove (most easily accessed hiking to the water at left, then around clockwise). The next area is Sunset Point for a western view across Lake Superior. I have fond memories of 407 E. Arch St. in my youth, if you happen by. Awesome, Sherry – you’ll have so much fun!!! 😘

      1. Thank you so much you rock! 😘
