Folk Music Poetry

I watched a documentary the other night about legendary singer and songwriter, Bob Dylan, and thought I’d put my pen to paper to see if I could develop lyrics broadly within the folk music genre…

A pint of stout and a shot to boot
Must admit I missed last call
Sharing lines with a lady in red
Standing close on down the hall

Twenty-cent phone for a yellow cab
Trip for two, spent in the park
Name was Brandy and her flavor sweet
Twixt the starlight and the dark

Morning showed with a blanket of dew
Happy souls wrapped in warm arms
Said weโ€™d meet again another time
Shoot the moon twice with love charms

The days went by so I rang her up
Laid my cards down on the line
You’re on my mind every night and day
Life with you through time, divine

We tied the knot in the spring that year
Spoke of family come fall
It pays when you give your heart a chance
Love at first sight, after all

  1. I like it, definitely a folky feel and maybe a bit of alt-country thrown in too. I could imagine this sung by the likes of Ryan Adams, Wilco, maybe even Josh Rouse.

    1. Right on, thanks ๐Ÿ‘

  2. Successful attempt! ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ‘

    1. Thank you, lovely Michele. I very much appreciate your comments! ๐Ÿ™๐Ÿป Yes, I think so. ๐Ÿ‡ฎ๐Ÿ‡ช In fact, more than once during composition, I almost reached out to you in consideration of adding a chorus ๐ŸŽถ – being familiar with your wonderful writing talents, and because your Irish eyes make me smile. ๐Ÿ˜‰

      1. You are welcome, generous Phil. Not sure how helpful I would have been with my jetlagged brain but thank you for thinking I had something worthwhile to offer. ๐Ÿ™๐Ÿป Sing it Bing! ๐ŸŽต

        1. I’ve never doubted you, Michele, and this certainly wasn’t the first time I thought about us writing together. As for my ๐ŸŽต voice, I only sing in the shower, which is why I find myself taking so many sponge baths. ๐Ÿ˜† Just joshin’.

          1. Well, very kind. I may have left part of my brain somewhere over the Atlantic. Hopefully it makes its way to me, sooner or later.
