Cave Behind Waterfall

This cave can be accessed behind Big Laurel Falls in the Virgin Falls State Natural Area, located in Sparta, Tennessee. The falls are 40-feet tall and the cave is approximately 160-feet wide. Interestingly, all the water runs back into the cave and underground, filtering into Tennessee’s largest network of caverns. There’s also a sinkhole present in the cave, which seems slightly larger with each visit.

I’m enchanted with caves and trails that lead to the unknown.

You would enjoy hiking this park, I think, as there are additional caves – one where water pours out of the mountainside, as a 110-foot tall waterfall, before vanishing straight back underground! Thanks so much, dear Mary 🙂

It’s a great park to visit with many sights to enjoy! Though, picking the right time when water is present can be a challenge.

So glad you like it, my friend. This park is unusual, in the sense that it sits atop a massive network of underground caverns. The creeks and waterfalls tend to filter through the ground and vanish from sight – as does the waterfall at this cave. Thanks for stopping by, Katherine 🌺
