White Water

A mountain stream flows rapidly over rocks, surrounded by lush greenery and bare tree branches. The water appears frothy and dynamic, indicating a lively current. I took this photograph while hiking in the Smoky Mountains of Tennessee, along Middle Prong Little River, in the Tremont section.

Foaming white water, … you’ve perfectly described the scene, my darling Phil, … you’re so lucky being able to see such a dynamic and vibrant scene,, … a stand and stare moment, enough to fill the soul, … to be able to see through your eyes, it makes you feel you’re actually standing there, beside you, drinking it all in, … have a wonderful Thursday, my friend, my poetic companion,… sending all my love from the UK to the US, first class of course,…❤️❤️❤️

Words flow from your creative soul like a mountain stream in spring, glistening in the light of a new day, so beautiful and welcoming. I so wish we could stand and stare as a pair, taking in all that nature has to share, white water and the emotion of the moment. I appreciate you so much, my darling Penny, and continue to wish on every star, near and far, that may bring such dreams to fruition. Sending all my love from the US to the UK, first class of course ❤️❤️❤️

What a wonderful scene. You can almost feel the power and freshness of the water! A beautiful place to pause and take it all in.

Thanks very much, Dirk. Indeed, that entire area in the Smoky Mountains has a variety of waterways, with many opportunities for photographer’s.

How do you achieve this? Do you have a dark glass filter over the lens and slow shutterspeed?

    1. Phil Avatar

Hi Neil. I’m usually on site for such photography at or before sunrise, and shoot until the light becomes overwhelming, adding a polarizing lens (just 2 stops), at that point, to dim the brightness. I shoot RAW with manual settings, using a tripod, a nearly closed Aperture and the lowest ISO setting I can use, while metering the light via Shutter speed – preferably 1/2 second (or slightly faster, if the flow of water is voluminous) – and may at times underexpose the shot to keep the brightness down. Lastly, for post production I use Affinity Photo, Pure RAW3 and, at times, the Nik Collection. Thanks for visiting!
