Poem

Looking back, I grew up on Lake Superior in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, in the city of Marquette, a location to which I attach many fond memories…

Of shallow pools, lucky stars and footprints
Traveling on a wave back through time
High top sneakers, t-shirts and torn blue jeans
Drifting sand dunes with daylight to climb

Memories of mountains in winter white
Wooden skis, leather boots bound with string
Shredding moguls down Snowfield at Cliffs Ridge
Every season brought reason to sing

Transcendence found me in another state
As so often, the life of a child
New friends and a wish to return, someday
Reminiscing… I laughed and I smiled

Phil, are you a Michigander too? I was born in Flint and grew up in Oakland County. One of my nieces lives in Marquette! Small world.

This is such a lovely, vivid snapshot of childhood. You’ve perfectly captured that bittersweet mix of joyful nostalgia and the longing to go back, if only for a moment. The imagery of Lake Superior, the worn-out sneakers, and those wooden skis is incredibly evocative. It sounds like a truly magical place to grow up. Thank you for sharing it Phil 🤝

Thanks so much, Srikanth. It was a splendid place, indeed, and the big lake never disappointed. It’s said that we can never go home, again, but sometimes I’d like to try. Have a great week ahead!
