Actually, this is Spruce Flats Falls, a 30-foot tall waterfall located in the Tremont section of the Smoky Mountains. Following significant snowfall last week, and with temperatures since then below freezing, yesterday’s forecast of warmer weather was enough to call me to enjoy the great outdoors!
It was still below freezing when I arrived at the trailhead, 30 minutes before sunrise. Not yet light, and aware that there would be ice along the way, I proceeded up the mountain with caution.
When I arrived, seeing the frozen falls was a treat, as there were pockets of running water visible behind the ice. With rocks along the river often either partially or completely iced over, on a few occasions I needed to climb the hillside so as to circumvent hazardous footing. All told, it was a good exercise in methodology of movement, balance and patience.
Prints. If you like my photography, you might consider purchasing a print from my gallery. Many different sizes and print types are available to select, and I know that these winter scenes would look wonderful on a wall in your home!
